Roscoe “Jack” A. Hires, age 93, of Ionia, Michigan and formerly of Battle Creek, passed away on April 28, 2019. He was born on July 6, 1925 in Elwood, TX., the son of Ernest and Lulu (Cash) Hires. Roscoe moved in 1980 to Ionia from Battle Creek, where he made his home. He was employed at the Clark Equipment Company as a hydraulic cylinder tester, retiring in 1980 after thirty years of service. Roscoe served in the United States Army, 101st Airborne Division during WWII from which he was awarded a Purple Heart metal. He was also a member of the VFW. Roscoe trained field trial dogs and was a national field training dog judge. He enjoyed working in the yard and hunting in his free time. Roscoe was united in marriage to Irmgard Ruth Hines in Germany in 1951, she preceded him in death. Also preceding him in death are his parents; Ernest and Lulu Hires, brothers; Earnest Carl and Jesse Ray Hires, and a sister; Dorothy Whittle. He is survived by his brothers; Jerry Hires of West Monroe, LA., Richard Hires of Monterey, LA., Bobby (Lucille) Hires of Battle Creek, Chester (Mary) Hires of Robertline, LA., sisters; Mary Alford of Tyler Town, MS., Marie Hires of Monroe, LA., Margaret (Neil) Brinson of Ft. Worth, TX., several nieces and nephews, and beloved friends Tom (Jane) Healey. The family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 1, 2019 at the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home & Cremation Services. Funeral services are scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 2, 2019, at the funeral home, Rev. James Gysel officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at Floral Lawn memorial Gardens Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
