Cathy E. Larson

With deep love and sadness, we announce the passing of Cathy Cunningham Larson, who departed this life on October 12th at the age of 69.

Cathy was born on Nov. 13, 1956. She was a lifetime member of our community and a proud graduate of Battle Creek Central’s class of 1974. She was an active member of many clubs and organizations in high school and drove to events in her purple Nova named Doris. Cathy continued her education at KCC after graduation.

In 1976, Cathy met the love of her life, Mike Larson. They were married in her parents’ backyard on Beadle Lake. She and Mike celebrated 48 years of marriage in August and Mike is still her Prince Charming. Cathy dedicated her life to her children Sara and Drew. She was a full-time mom to her children and many others who were always at the house. Her passion for children continued when she joined the staff at Minges Brook Elementary. She shared her love of reading and writing with students there, as well as many hours volunteering on various committees. She showered Minges with her kindness, warm heart, beautiful smile and generous spirit.

Throughout her life, Cathy was known for her love of literature, James Taylor, the lake, her garden, and devotion for her family. Her greatest joy was living with Drew and his wife Mallory, escaping to her favorite getaway (sunbathing) with her daughter Sara and husband Tom at their lake home; and sitting on the porch with Mike, who often wore her favorite plaid shirt.

Cathy maintained lasting friendships throughout the years. She was always available for a chat or to offer words of encouragement. Her contagious laughter and wisdom will be missed by all, especially her beloved Hooties, with whom she shares years of memories, from camping to coffee talks.

She leaves her beloved husband of 48 years, Mike, whom she cherished, son Drew (Mallory), daughter Sara (Tom) Duncan, grandchildren Lexi (Evan) Hunter and baby Harper, Aunt Teet (LYLAS), and special friend Mia Smith. She was preceded in death by her mother Juanita Lyons (Vance) and sister Cindy.

We will forever cherish the memories, the lessons learned and the love Cathy gave so freely. Her presence brought comfort, happiness and love. She was a treasure beyond words and blessed us with her grace. She will forever be in our hearts and prayers.

At Cathy’s request, there will not be a funeral service at this time. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that to honor Cathy, please make a donation in her honor to Willard Library, 7 West VanBuren Street Battle Creek, MI 49017.  Arrangements by Richard A.
