Charles “Chuck” Winter, age 87, of Battle Creek passed away on July 18, 2026.

Born in Logansport, Indiana on August 12, 1938 the son of James Merriam Winter and Dorothy Verna (Pease) Winter. He was the youngest of three children.

After graduating from Edwardsburg High School in 1957 Chuck attended Indiana University and graduated from Andrews University. While in high school he proudly enlisted for six years in the United States Marine Corps Reserve with an honorable discharge in 1962. One of Chuck’s part-time jobs while in college was in Paul Mayhew’s Funeral Home in Edwardsburg where he met the love of his life, Janice Ann Taylor at a Christmas eve party. On July 7, 1963 he and Jan were married.

Following college, he began a thirty-seven-year career in human resources working for the Oliver Corporation in South Bend, IN, the Weatherhead Co. in Columbus and Ashland, OH, Simpson Industries, Birmingham, MI and General Products Corp. Jackson, MI. In 2002 he began a five-year stint as a corporate recruiter for Lou Michaels Associates, Battle Creek, MI.

Chuck often joked about an email he sent to friends in May 2007 stating he was taking a leave of absence for the summer to see what he wanted to do when he grew up. In the fall of 2007 Chuck and Jan felt a “call from God” to enter the ministry. Coupled with academic pursuits he became a licensed pastor in 2008 and ordained pastor in July 2014. He believed that entering the ministry was clearly “a God thing” that no one in their right mind would give someone his age the opportunity to serve the Lord.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Erika (Bill) Wood of West End, NC; a son, Brian Winter of Battle Creek; five grandchildren, Spencer (Bri), Quinten and Gabby (Nic) Sykes; Elle (Tyler) Mckellar and Reese Winter and four great-grandchildren, Tristan, Gwen, Lily Grace and Hayden Wood; sister Lois Winter of Battle Creek. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and grandson, Logan.
