If you knew Charmaine Tindol, you knew her presence. She was sharp, quick-witted, and just fiery enough to keep everyone on their toes. She didn’t fade into the background; she ran the room. Always put together, always ready with a thought or opinion, and always someone you noticed the moment she walked in.
Charmaine Tindol, age 86, passed away peacefully on April 9th, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of love, strength, and deep devotion to her family.
Born on April 20, 1939, in Knoxville, Tennessee, to Leslie and Opal (Hensley) Shorter, Charmaine moved with her family to Battle Creek, Michigan in 1942. She graduated from Battle Creek Central High School.
Charmaine met Chuck when she was still in high school, and he would later say he knew from the first time he saw her that he would spend his life loving her. They married shortly after she graduated and went on to share 70 years of marriage built on deep love, laughter, and a playful back and forth that never faded.
Together, they built a life full of experiences, traveling the world and creating memories that spanned decades. They also cherished many years in St. Petersburg, Florida, where they built a second home and formed lasting friendships, a place that became a meaningful part of their story. They renewed their vows at St. Jude’s Cathedral on their 50th anniversary, a reflection of the commitment they never wavered from.
Chuck’s devotion to Charmaine was evident throughout their life together, never missing a chance to make sure she knew how much he loved her. In her final weeks, he never left her side.
Family was everything to Charmaine. She was a proud and devoted mother to her sons, Terry (Julie) and Mike (Pamela), and a grandmother who left a lasting impression on each of her grandchildren, Terra (Derek), Justin (Elaina), Blake (Melina), Jake, Caleb, and Chase.
She was not the cookie baking grandma. In fact, her boys loved to joke that she was a terrible cook, a story that became part of the family’s humor over the years. But what she gave her family was far greater. She gave them her presence, her personality, her strength, and a lifetime of memories shaped by her unmistakable spirit.
She found joy in time spent with her growing family, including her great grandchildren, Macklin, Andersyn, Burkley, Titus, Judson, Graydon, Bella, and Mila. She also held close the memory of her great grandson Anson Michael Tindol.
Charmaine lived life with a competitive spirit that showed up in everything she did. Whether it was tennis, golf, bowling, or a simple card game of bridge or euchre, she played to win. She was an avid watcher of Jeopardy and rarely missed a chance to test her knowledge, often keeping score right along with the contestants. A natural night owl, she was often up later than most, fully enjoying the quiet hours of the evening.
She was also incredibly proud of her work. She began her career as a nurse at Leila Hospital, a role that reflected her care for others, and later spent 35 years with the Kellogg Company, where she built lasting relationships and took great pride in her time there.
From a young age, Charmaine held deep bonds with those she loved. She was especially devoted to her mother, Opal, who passed away in 1978. Even decades later, she spoke of her often, a reflection of the lasting love that shaped who she became.
More than anything, Charmaine will be remembered for the way she lived, with confidence, strength, humor, and love. She was deeply devoted to her family, and especially to Chuck, the love of her life and her partner of 70 years. The life they built together and the love they shared will continue to live on through the family she cherished so deeply.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, April 22 at 1:00 PM at the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home, with Pastor Elmer Hess officiating. Family and friends are invited to visit beginning at 12:00 PM. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery, with a luncheon to gather and share memories afterward at Miller’s Time Out. www.henryfuneralhome.org
