Cheryl R. Barea, Age 61, of Kalamazoo, passed away on September 23, 2025, at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo surrounded by her family. Cheryl was born on March 13, 1964, in Battle Creek, the daughter of Norman and Beverly (Howell) Barea. She was a proud graduate of Lakeview High School, where her exceptional talent in sports shone through as a three-sport athlete, notably earning a state title in volleyball. She continued her athletic and academic journey at Michigan State University, playing Volleyball for the Spartans and achieving her bachelor's degree. After her time at Michigan State University, Cheryl went on to complete her master’s degree from Western Michigan University as part of the 1987 class.
Cheryl devoted over 25 years to her career as a Social Security Disability Supervisor for the State of Michigan, making a significant impact on the lives of many. Her professional journey also included time as a firefighter and a schoolteacher, showcasing her diverse skills and commitment to public service.
Outside of her professional life, Cheryl was known for her vibrant spirit and passion for adventure. She loved riding motorcycles, sunbathing, and spending time outdoors tending to nature. She was a strong advocate for animal rights, health and community. She frequently donated blood and supported her nieces and nephews during their sporting events. Her enjoyment of rock concerts highlighted her love for music and connection with friends and family. Cheryl also was very active in working out, running, playing volleyball and taking care of animals.
Cheryl is survived by her brother Bruce (Anne) Barea of Battle Creek, niece Leigh Barea of Kenosha, Wisconsin, nephew Louis (Dr. Mikayla) Barea of Troy, Michigan with great niece Avery Barea, nephew Dr. Michael “Mickey” Barea of Battle Creek and Aunt Rita Bienkowski of Mt. Clemens, Michigan. She is also survived by her life partner Jack Masters of Battle Creek and his son, Jace Masters. She was preceded in death by her parents, Norman and Beverly Barea.
A celebration of life will be held at Squirrel Hollow Golf Course in Battle Creek, MI, on October 12, 2025, from 2:00 PM to 7:00 PM, providing an opportunity for friends and family to celebrate her remarkable life. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Chubby Goat Acres in Schoolcraft, Michigan or to Farm Sanctuary in Watkins Glen, New York.
