Harriet J. Pierman, 92, of Battle Creek passed away Friday June 3, 2011. She was born on September 16, 1918 in Sturgis, MI to George and Mary (Koekkoek) Leestma.
Harriet graduated from Grand Rapids Central High School in 1936 and Blodgett Hospital Nursing Program in 1939. She served in the U.S. Army as a nurse during WWII. Harriett was employed by the Calhoun County Health Department for many years.
Harriet is survived by a son, Douglas B. Pierman, of Canton, MI; daughters, Gail Berzins, of Jacksonville, FL and Susan L. Hiller, of Wheaton, IL; four grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Jeffrey R. Pierman in 1969.
Harriet was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Art Center, Women’s Overseas Service League, and Master Gardeners. She was a co-founder and lifetime board member of the Food Bank of South Central Michigan. Harriet enjoyed gardening, needlework, ceramics/sculpture, and crossword puzzles.
A memorial service will be held 2pm Tuesday June 7, 2011 at the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home with Rev. Dr. B. Mason Shambach of Westlake Presbyterian Church officiating. Family will receive friends one hour before services. Inurnment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.
