Herbert "Herb" J. Hancock, Jr.

It is with profound sadness that the family of Herbert “Herb” Hancock, Jr. announces his unexpected passing. Herb was a beloved father, son, brother, nephew, uncle, cousin, and friend whose presence brought joy, laughter, and comfort to all who knew him.

Herb was born on November 10, 1968, in Battle Creek, Michigan, to Herbert, Sr. and Kathleen (VanZandt) Hancock. He graduated from Battle Creek Central High School in May of 1987.

Herb will be fondly remembered for his infectious sense of humor, his willingness to lend a helping hand, and his deep love for music. A hardworking and devoted father and friend, he was deeply respected by those who had the privilege of knowing him. Following in his father’s footsteps as a true “jack of all trades,” Herb focused primarily on carpentry, earning a reputation for creativity, problem-solving, and craftsmanship. His integrity and skill brought him many repeat customers, yet no matter how busy he was, he always made time to help someone in need.

Herb’s passions were many. He had a particular love for analog stereos and turntables and enjoyed outdoor activities such as disc golf, kayaking, and camping. Herb was also an excellent Tennis player where he played many years with his father and friends. Above all, he loved to make people laugh—whether through classic dad jokes, playful accents, spontaneous lyrics, or taking on challenges simply to prove they could be done. Herb had a remarkable gift for brightening any room, and bringing happiness to others was truly his greatest joy. His love for family and friends ran deep, and he took great pride in lifting their spirits however he could.

In December, Herb traveled to California to work alongside his lifelong friend Ken, an experience that ended tragically when he returned home to God on January 9th following an accident. Throughout his life, Herb cherished opportunities to travel and experience different cultures and places, including a memorable trip to Thailand that was only possible because of Ken. These adventures, and the friendships that made them possible, were deeply meaningful to him and will always be treasured by his family.

Adventurous and generous at heart, Herb’s faith and love for God guided his life. Prayer, family, and friendship were always at the forefront of his thoughts, and he did his best to live with kindness, gratitude, and purpose.

Herb is survived by his father, Herbert Hancock, Sr. (Kathy) his son, Josh; daughters Madison, Alexis, Ashlyn, and Aliyah; his devoted sister, Kristeen Fogle; brother, Jim Fogle; aunts Judy Phillips and Linda Conlogue; Uncle Steve’o Conlogue; special cousins who were more like brothers, Steven (Jessica) Elliott and Richard Elliott and many other beloved family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Kathleen (VanZandt) Hancock; his maternal grandparents, Roy and Marge VanZandt; and his paternal grandparents, William and Margaret Hancock.

A special note is made of Herb’s love for animals, particularly his compassion for rescued dogs and his deep concern for their well-being.

Herb will be forever loved, deeply missed, and remembered for the light he brought into the lives of so many. We love you always, Tiger. A Celebration of Life for Herb will be held on Saturday, February 7, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., at We are Saints Again, 517 E. Michigan Ave., Battle Creek, MI 49014. www.henryfuneralhome.org
