Jean Ann Mahoney

Jean Ann Mahoney, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, teacher, and friend, passed away peacefully in her home on June 16, 2026, at the age of 86. She leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, dedication, and service that will continue to inspire all who knew her.

Born on October 20, 1939, in Waukegan, Illinois, Jean lived a life centered on family, education, and caring for others. She devoted much of her professional career to teaching at Urbandale Elementary, where she inspired generations of students with her patience, encouragement, and unwavering belief in their potential. To Jean, teaching was more than a profession—it was a calling. Her classroom was a place where children felt valued, supported, and challenged to become their best selves.

Jean's greatest love story began when she met Chuck Mahoney. Although they lived on opposite sides of Lake Michigan, their relationship flourished through years of dedication, letters, visits, and unwavering commitment. After dating for eight years, they married and built a beautiful life together. Their love spanned an incredible 68 years, including nearly 60 years of marriage, serving as a testament to faithfulness, devotion, and enduring love.

Above all, Jean cherished her family. She was a devoted mother to her son, Rick (Jenni) Mahoney, and her daughter, Heather (Tom) Shipley. Her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren, Mason Mahoney, Emily Shipley, Ethan Shipley, Elijah Shipley, Katie Shipley, Finn Mahoney, and Grace Mahoney. She delighted in watching them grow and took pride in each of their accomplishments. Jean was also blessed with two great-grandchildren, Eden Shipley and Isaiah Shipley, who brought immense joy to her later years.

Jean was preceded in death by her twin brother, Jim Clay; her half-brother, Hank Clay; and her sister, Jan Rife.

Those who knew Jean will remember her warm smile, strong spirit, memorable laugh, and generous heart. She possessed a rare gift for making others feel welcomed, loved, and important. Whether teaching in the classroom, supporting her family, or offering a kind word to a friend, Jean's compassion touched countless lives.

Jean's legacy lives on through the family she loved so deeply, the students she taught so faithfully, and the many friends whose lives were enriched by her kindness. While her passing leaves a profound void, her family finds comfort in the memories she created, the values she instilled, and the love she shared so freely.

A loving wife, devoted mother, proud grandmother and great-grandmother, dedicated teacher, and treasured friend, Jean Ann Mahoney leaves behind a legacy that will endure for generations. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing and loving her.
