Joe Edward Romo, a beloved husband, father, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully at his home in Battle Creek, Michigan, on December 8, 2025, after a long and courageous battle with prostate cancer. Born on July 20, 1947, in Saginaw, Michigan, Joe was the cherished son of Joe Tiburcio Romo and Beatrice Irene Romo.
He was united in marriage to Regina (Druskis) Romo on July 10, 1993, in a heartfelt ceremony at the Saginaw VA Chapel. Together, they created a life filled with joy, laughter, and unwavering love.
Joe's life was marked by dedication and service. At the tender age of 17, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he served from 1964 to 1967. Joe held the rank of Private First Class and was awarded several decorations, including the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and Vietnam Service Medal. His commitment to his country did not end there; he returned to service from 1974 to 1991, attaining the rank of Sergeant First Class. Throughout his military career, he earned numerous accolades, including the Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm.
After his military service, Joe transitioned into a fulfilling career as a Medical Administrative Assistant at the Saginaw VA Hospital, where he dedicated himself to helping fellow veterans until his retirement. His compassion extended beyond his work; Joe was an active member of the Battle Creek Art Group, supported the Humane Society of South-Central Michigan, and had previously been involved with The Eagles of Houghton Lake.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Regina; his loving daughter, Alexandria Flint-Harrell, and son-in-law, Cody Flint-Harrell; his two dogs, Rusty and Chancey; and his grand dog, Riley. Joe was preceded in death by his beloved dog, Zoe and grand dog, Ox.
Joe had a zest for life that extended to his many interests, including fishing, woodworking, golfing, and art. He found great joy in music, particularly from artists like Gordon Lightfoot, Bob Dylan, and Leonard Cohen, and he took immense pride in his beautifully maintained yard.
Known for his stubborn yet humorous spirit, Joe was always ready to help those in need, leaving a lasting impression on the hearts of many. Joe lived a life full of purpose, love, and laughter. He enjoyed life deeply and embraced every moment he was given. While he will be missed beyond measure, his loved ones take comfort in knowing he is now at peace and in a better place. His spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
The family would like to express special thanks to the hospice nurses, Caitlin and TJ, for their compassionate care during Joe's final days.
As we celebrate the life of Joe Edward Romo, let us cherish the memories he created and the love he shared with all who knew him. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to the Humane Society of South-Central Michigan and Calhoun County Animal Center in his honor.
