John Patrick Kerns, Age 73, born on August 7, 1952, in Battle Creek, Michigan, passed away on March 18, 2026. He was a devoted maintenance crew member for the Grand Trunk Railroad company, dedicating 41 years to the upkeep and safety of structures and bridges—a testament to his unwavering commitment and expertise in his field.
Throughout his life, John found joy in golfing and playing pool, passions that brought him relaxation and camaraderie. He also took great pride in his work, often using the skills and knowledge he acquired on the job to assist others with a variety of handyman tasks. His generosity and willingness to share his talents reflected a caring spirit and strong sense of community. John was a 1971 graduate of Lakeview High School.
John's family and friends remember him fondly. He shared a loving six and a half year relationship with his girlfriend, Tina Ashley. He is also survived by his brother, Tom (Sandy) Kerns of Bellevue, MI ; stepsons, Chad (Sarah) Schenkelberger of Traverse City, MI and David (Qwen) Schenkelberger of West Bloomfield, MI; five step-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews who will cherish his memory.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Kerns Sr. and Nelda (Umphrey) Kerns; and siblings Robert Kerns Jr., Barbara Fairbanks, and Sally Hansen. Their memories remain an integral part of John's life story.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday April 7, 2026, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the Richard A Henry Funeral Home, located at 703 Capital Ave SW, Battle Creek, MI 49015. Following this, a memorial service will take place from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. to honor John's life and legacy.
In lieu of flower donations may be made to the local Humane Society.
