Karen L. “Sis” “Kare-Bear” McCotter, age 65 of Battle Creek, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on Saturday morning, June 6, 2026. She was born in Battle Creek on April 11, 1961, to Hollis and Donna (Dempsey) Thurman. She graduated from Lakeview High School with the Class of 1979.
Karen devoted more than 26 years to Lakeview Schools as a reading support specialist, where she made a lasting impact on countless students and families. She later served as manager of Minges Creek Racquet Club for 13 years. An avid tennis player, Karen achieved the distinction of winning a state championship as an adult.
Karen married her high school sweetheart, Joseph “Joe” McCotter, on October 20,1979, and together they shared 47 wonderful years; he survives. She is also survived by her son, Greg (Sofie) McCotter; her daughter, Jessica “Jess” (Jamie) Wynne; her beloved grandchildren, Jada, Jayden, Connor, Joseph, Carter, Nicholas, Camille, and James; her parents, Hollis and Donna Thurman; her brother, Tim (Kari) Thurman; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sister, Kristen Marler.
Karen loved her family fiercely and never missed a moment to support them. Whether at a game, performance, or school event, she could always be found in the front row with her signature clapper and foam finger, proudly cheering them on. Above all else, her family was her life, and she took great pride in being a wife, daughter, sister, mother, and grandmother.
Karen will also be remembered for her vibrant personality and the joy she brought to those around her. She had a quick wit and a contagious laugh, often finding humor in everyday moments and laughing until she could hardly breathe. She cherished the many friendships that enriched her life, remaining closely connected with her teaching friends, affectionately known as the “Golden Girls.” She also treasured her tennis friends, with whom she shared many fun outings and memorable trips, as well as her Dolphin friends. These relationships reflected the warmth, loyalty, and joy she brought to every part of her life.
Her family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Friday, June 12, 2026 at the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home and Cremation Services, where funeral services to celebrate Karen’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, June 13, 2026 with Celebrant Jonathon Barnes, officiating. Interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to the Lakeview Youth Association (LYA), P.O. Box 753 Battle Creek, MI 49016.
