Larry Grey West, age 84, of Battle Creek, Michigan, passed away on April 14, 2025, surrounded by loved ones. He was born on July 18, 1940, in Whitleyville, Tennessee, to Earsley and Haskell West. Larry was the fifth of six children in his family. As a young child, he moved to Battle Creek, Michigan, where he graduated from Battle Creek Central High School in 1958, earning recognition as an All-City lineman.
Larry was a proud member of the U.S. Army, serving as an 82nd Airborne Paratrooper. He cherished his time in the service and often shared stories of his experiences. After his military service, Larry worked at Kellogg’s.
In 1966, Larry married Sharon Keeler, and together they had a daughter, Terri Ann Ebbs. After their divorce, he moved to Key West, where he embraced the vibrant island lifestyle. He thoroughly enjoyed the adventures and the “changes in latitude” that Key West offered. In 1976, he welcomed his son, Larry West Jr.
Around his 50th birthday, Larry returned to Battle Creek, where he remained until his passing. Always adventurous, he celebrated his 82nd birthday by skydiving—a fitting tribute to his fearless spirit. He loved playing cards and darts and was always the life of the party. Larry wasn’t shy about his love for dancing and having a good time, and he relished any opportunity to gather with loved ones. Whether it was a reunion, party, or casual get-together, he loved being surrounded by those he cared about.
Larry’s family was his pride and joy. He is survived by his daughter, Terri Ann Ebbs; his son, Larry West Jr.; two grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; his sister, Linda Keyes; and many loving extended family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Earsley and Haskell West; his grandson, Shay Dion; and his siblings Letha West, John Leaman West, Leda Farnham, and Lola Ferguson.
He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His love of family and friends, adventure, and the joy he brought into the lives of others will be cherished forever.
A celebration of Larry’s life will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday, May 2, 2025, at the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home and Cremation Services. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. www.henryfuneralhome.org
