Mary E Weathers

Mary Evelyn Weathers was born in Louisville, Kentucky on August 20, 1921, to Margaret Lucille and John Louis Weathers, Sr. (preceded her in death.) She was the second among four children. Her siblings were Theodore Weathers, John Louis Weathers. Jr. (Buster) and Dorothy Lee Diggs (preceded her in death).

When Mary was still a child, she and her sister Dorothy were sent to live with her grandparents John and Evelyn Wimsett in New Albany, Indiana because her mother worked long hours. Her brothers Theodore and Buster stayed behind in Kentucky because they are older and could provide for themselves. Her grandmother quickly became her primary mother figure, teaching her life skills such as cooking, which she says she still is not very good at. Mary adored her grandmother and appreciated everything she did for her to this day. She may have been the reason why Mary had such a head for business:

It was in New Albany that she later graduated from Scribner High School. Soon after she got a job at Baker Brothers Cleaners, where she met a man named Robert Kemp. Robert took a shine to Mary, and they eventually married. Unfortunately, the marriage did not last long and they went their separate ways. With her experience working at the cleaners, a business opportunity came her way. She was asked to take over a cleaning business in Battle Creek, Michigan. She decided to take this opportunity and start a new adventure.

In this role she was not only accommodating to her customers, but cared very much for her employees as well. With her love for children, she began to care for her employee's children in the basement of the cleaners. She made sure the children were taken care of and safe.

Her ability to run a successful business did not go unnoticed, she was asked to assist managing the Bellman and Waiters Club in Battle Creek. Mary did not have a lot of free time with all her added responsibilities; she always made time to help those in need. Mary also assisted the youth in her community to find jobs which made her well known.

After retiring from BC Cleaners, Mary had more free time which she filled with some travel and playing cards. Although she has a fear of planes, she did travel to California for a vacation.

In accordance with her wishes cremation has taken place and there will be no services. www.henryfuneralhome.org
