Sandra Irene Allwardt, 82, of Battle Creek, passed away April 19, 2026, at Laurels of Bedford, surrounded by the love of her family.
Sandy was born February 22, 1944, in Battle Creek to Ralph and Mildred Murray. She graduated from Lakeview High School in 1963 and remained a lifelong member of the community she loved so deeply.
Sandy dedicated her life to caring for others, especially her family. She also worked outside the home for many years at Battle Creek Kmart and as a beloved noon-hour supervisor and crossing guard at Riverside Elementary School, where she became a familiar and comforting presence to countless children and families.
On January 7, 1967, Sandy married the love of her life, Phillip Allwardt. Together they built a life centered on love, laughter, and family, raising their two children, Kimberly and John. Over nearly 60 years of marriage, they created a legacy that continues to grow through their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Sandy was truly a friend to everyone she met. A woman of deep faith, she was a longtime member of Lakeview Baptist Church, where she also volunteered with the food pantry. She had a special love for animals, a passion for garage sales and collecting little treasures, and a gift for conversation—never missing an opportunity to chat and connect with others. Her warmth and kindness made people feel seen, welcomed, and valued.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Phillip; her sister-in-law, Jan Niebauer; her children, Kimberly (Steve) Metzer of Grand Blanc and John (Erin) Allwardt of Battle Creek; and her cherished grandchildren, Karly (Drew) Montague, Joshua (Ashley) Metzer, Cassidy (Shane) Brooks, Mallory Timm, Jon-Christian Hamlett, Nathaniel, William, Alexander, and Benjamin Allwardt. She also leaves behind her beloved great-grandchildren, Baylee, Colin, Nora, Jett, Tanner, Summer, and Kali; her adored cat Montana, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members who will forever hold her in their hearts.
Sandy was preceded in death by her parents; in-laws Carl and Mary Allwardt; step-father, Thomas Elliott; her sisters, Susan Davis and Bonnie Gross; her brother-in-law, Ronald Niebauer; and her infant great-grandson, Max Byron Metzer.
Family and friends will be received at the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home, Friday, May 8, 10:00-11:00 am with a celebration of Sandy’s life immediately following at 11 am.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Lakeview Baptist Church, Marion E. Burch Adult Day Care Program sign project, or Companion Cats Inc. in honor of Sandy’s generous and caring spirit. www.henryfuneralhome.org
