Thomas Allen Garland, 71, passed away peacefully at home on June 27, 2026.
Born on August 12, 1954, and raised in Battle Creek, Michigan, Tom lived a life defined by creativity, compassion, a quick wit, and a willingness to help others. A gifted caricature artist, he had a wonderful sense of humor and an ability to make people laugh. He also built a career where his remarkable mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills had countless people asking him for help with anything technical. Whether creating art or making something with his hands, Tom approached everything with care, love, and pride.
Tom found joy in drawing, hiking, boating, fishing, riding motorcycles and, above all, spending time with his family and friends. He possessed the soul of an artist through and through, seeing beauty in the world and sharing it with others through his work and his kindness. He was always ready to lend a helping hand, and there seemed to be very little he couldn't fix. His compassionate nature, generous spirit, quiet humility, and ability to bring a smile to others left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.
Tom is survived by his beloved wife, Debbie Garland; his children, Thomas Garland II, Joseph Garland, and Daniel Garland; his stepchildren, Sarah Frasier and John Schanke; his grandchildren, Allie Garland and Tommie Garland; and his siblings, Gary Garland, Ellen Stevens, Janie Ruhl, Kathy Grimes, Cindy Van Asperen, and Theresa Elwell.
Tom's legacy lives on through the love he shared, the lives he touched, and the countless acts of kindness he extended throughout his life. In honoring his memory, may we remember the importance of helping one another, offering compassion freely, and leaving the world better than we found it.
