Carol Murphey

Carol Jean Murphey, age 80, of Battle Creek, passed away Saturday, January 7, 2023, surrounded by her husband and 3 children. She was born April 5, 1942, in Salem, Ohio the daughter of Edgar and Ruth (Hertz) Arfman and was a 1960 graduate of Salem High School. She met her future husband while working as a stenographer at the F.B.I. in Washington, D.C. On May 20, 1961, Carol married Erle Douglas Murphey, Jr. in Salem and lived in Pennsylvania and Ohio where she worked as an administrative assistant at Lincoln National Life. They moved to Battle Creek in 1991 and for ten years they owned and operated the Michigan Motel here in Battle Creek. Carol was a devout Christian and member of Chapel Hill United Methodist Church. She loved traveling, spending time with family members, playing with grandchildren, and doing all types of crafts and creative writing. She is survived by her husband Doug Murphey of Battle Creek; three children: Ed (JoAnne) Murphey of Houston, Texas, Shelley (Brent) Jackson of St. Paris, Ohio and Lori (Chris) Barton of Battle Creek; as well as five grandchildren: Nathan, Nicholas, Alyssa, Katie and Kyle. She was preceded in death by her parents. A Memorial Service to celebrate Carol’s life will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 11, 2023, at Chapel Hill United Methodist Church with The Rev. Julie Elmore and Pastor Dave Morton officiating. A luncheon will be held immediately following the service in the church fellowship hall. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. A private interment will be held at Fort Custer National Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed the church.
