George Climer

June 1, 1938 — August 14, 2022

Springfield

George Andrew Climer, age 84, of Springfield, died Sunday, August 14, 2022. He was born June 1, 1938, in Jefferson City, Tennessee the son of Robert and Fannie Mae (Voiles) Climer. George served in the Army during the Vietnam War, was honorably discharged in October of 1963, and continued to serve in the Army Reserve until September of 1967. He was proud to have served his country and always displayed his love and dedication for his country by flying the American flag at his home and wearing an Army hat wherever he went. George worked as a Telephone Technician for several telephone companies, retiring from McCleod USA, Rockford, Illinois in 2000.  He enjoyed fishing (and telling big fish stories), boating and bowling in his younger years. In his retired years you could always find him watching TV and surfing the internet.  George was a talker.  He would talk to anyone who had a minute to listen, and he loved to tease and laugh. George especially loved to talk about the "Love of his life", Mary.  He adored her and would tell everyone that she was the "best wife in the world". George also was very fond of his stepsons, always telling everyone how proud he was of them and how they helped him so much. He really liked their jokes. They never failed to make him laugh and shake his head.  George really thought the world of his family. He never missed an opportunity to talk about his grandchildren and how much he loved them and was proud of them.  He especially loved to follow his great granddaughters on social media, seeing all the excursions and fun things they were doing.  It made his day to see those pictures. On February 25, 2010, George was married to Mary Ann (Hudon-Hallack) Climer in Rockford, Illinois, who survives. He is also survived by two stepsons: Rick (Patty) Bonney and Scott (Cheryl) Bonney; five step grandchildren: Tim (Heather) Waterson, Tyler Bonney, Maggie Bonney, Xavier Bonney, and Michael Rolfe; three great grandchildren who he adored; one brother, Clarence Climer; nephew and niece: Kenny Varble and Robin Climer, and several other special nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Robert Climer and sister Shirley Climer.  A Graveside Service will be held Tuesday, August 23, 2022, at 11:30 a.m. at Fort Custer National Cemetery.
